Project Description

EuroHPC is a joint venture between European countries and the European Commission (EuroHPC JU) aimed at building exascale computing infrastructure in Europe. EuroHPC encompasses HPC (High Performance Computers) activities in two pillars. Pillar I is dedicated to acquiring, by 2020, three pre-exascale and five petascale supercomputers for researchers in academia and industry. Pillar II is a broad research and innovation plan aimed at adapting research issues and software to the capabilities of machines planned to be acquired in Pillar I. One of the activities of Pillar 2 is the construction of national EuroHPC competence centers. The installation of exascale supercomputers is planned for the years 2023-2025. The project aims to build national HPC competence centers, which are a natural extension of Digital Innovation Hubs. Their main task will be to support scientific research in industry involving researchers from the academic environment and utilizing computational resources provided by EuroHPC supercomputers. Key aspects of industry support will also include knowledge transfer on the use of supercomputer resources, seeking and matching partners for joint industry and research work, scaling research issues and software to exascale requirements, as well as training and developing technical skills in conducting computations on a large scale.
