In this project, we propose a novel use of the two-item retro-cue recall task (Guo et al., 2024; LaRocque et al., 2013) in an EEG-based CIT. This approach will allow for refined separation of the neuronal mechanisms underlying the CIT effect by evoking the orienting response (triggered by the presentation of probe cues) and facilitating/eliciting the processing of probe-related information (i.e., evoking emotional–motivational factors, e.g., inhibition) during the delay intervals preceding the rapid visual presentation of images, which in turn is followed by a decision on whether the cued image reappeared. This protocol combined with EEG source reconstruction (Rykaczewski et al., 2021) will enable us to investigate EEG source connectivity patterns related to both orienting response and emotional–motivational factors.
